Volunteer Opportunities at the Autry
Docent and Volunteer Opportunities at the Autry
Support the Autry National Center by joining our volunteer family! Volunteers serve in nearly every department of the institution, from the Collections Department to Visitor Services and Membership, to the Museum Stores; some interact with the public, others help with behind-the-scenes activities, and some serve as trained docents who guide and educate visitors of all ages. Volunteer hours are available weekdays, weekends, and special event evenings at both the Southwest Museum of the American Indian in Mt. Washington and the Museum of the American West in Griffith Park. Please browse our website to learn more about these events and programs.
Docents
Docents provide interpretation of the artifacts and exhibitions in the museum galleries through guided tours, gallery talks, and classes.
Docent training classes take place once a week for 3 months. Classes are led by museum curators and education staff.
Docents are required to serve actively once a week, September through July.
For more information about becoming an Autry Docent, please contact Susan DiCato at 323-667-2000 x237
Volunteers
Volunteers help the Autry National Center in a variety of ways and in several departments:
Education
Family Discovery Gallery Guides lead visitors through creative, object-based learning activities within an interactive, hands-on learning environment.
Gold Rush Guides work with museum educators as they teach students, adults, and children about the California Gold Rush in our outdoor Trails West.
Museum Store
Store assistants help store staff in daily store operation including customer service and creating displays. They assist with our online store by helping to package orders and they assist school tour groups.
Visitor Services & Membership
Information Volunteers provide visitor-friendly service to the general public by greeting them when they come into the museum and offering to answer any questions they may have about the museum and exhibits.
