The Autry’s school programs inspire critical thinking through inquiry-based tours that encourage analysis, reflection and dialogue, but we offer more than just tours. Our museums provide unique, interactive environments that draw upon a variety of intelligences and learning styles. We are committed to helping you meet your professional and personal goals through prepared lesson plans linked to curriculum standards, free bus transportation, and much more. The Autry National Center offers complimentary admission to California K-12 classroom teachers who have booked upcoming tours to the Museum of the American West. The Teacher Passport also gives you 10% off books purchased in the Museum Store for classroom use.
Looking for ideas to use in the classroom? Well, you’ve come to the right place. We have several lesson plans available online that you can download and use in the classroom. All lesson plans are written to meet the California Content Standards for History-Social Science and explore a broad range of topics centered on the convergence of cultures in the American West. Explore a new tool available to you and your students. Collections Online has more than 17,000 recordsincluding more than 14,000 imagesfrom the Museum of the American West’s artifact collections, and more than 40,000 records from our library databases. Images from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian are being added daily.
Explore the Learn More section to learn about some of the themes explored in our galleries. And don’t forget to click on the object name to see the full records, where you will find subject links to other records within the database.
You can customize the Collection Online by going to Log On My Favorites. Here you can save your images and gain access to them whenever you want. No need to research the database every time you log on.

Are you a teacher planning a field trip, a parent bringing your family, or a visitor who just wants to know how much a bison weighs? Then these trip sheets are just for you.
Download and print out these sheets and bring them with you to the Museum of the American West. They highlight an object in each gallery and include fun facts and questions. On the back of each sheet there is an activity for you, your students, or your family to complete.

Open one of our Outreach Kits and come face-to-face with history. Each kit profiles a community through the eyes of an actual person. Their stories, traditions, challenges, and opportunities come to life through carefully chosen resource materials and lesson plans, encouraging students to investigate their own family and community histories.
