2009 Summer Adventures

Learn, Play, Experience...

Six fun and exciting one-week camps taught by professional museum teachers. Engaging activities will focus on the following themes:

Summer Camp at the Autry National Center

Camp Hours:
Ages 5-7 (Kinder - 2nd grade)
9am - noon

Ages 8-12 (3 - 6 grade)
9am - 4pm


*Workshops run from 9am - 4pm and are for ages 8 - 12

Early Bird Discount (by May 1st) : Deduct 10%*
Sibling Discount: Deduct 5%
* Pre and Post Camp Care not included in Discount.

Cost for Half-Day Adventure (Ages 5-7), 9am - noon
$145 members/$185 non-members

Cost for Full Day Adventures (Ages 8-12), 9am - 4pm
$240 members/$300 non-members

Pre- and Post-Camp Care
Parents can drop off their kids as early as 8:am and pick them up as late as 6:pm. 
Registration is required.

5 days, 8am-9am: $20 members/$25 non-members
5 days, 4pm-6pm: $40 members/$50 non-members

Supervised Lunch
The museum will provide a supervised lunch period from noon to 1pm. 
Children must bring a sack lunch and drink. 
Please do not have children purchase lunch in the café.

Puppetry and Storytelling

Everyone likes a good story, but it is even better when you tell it yourself - with puppets! Listen to and share the legends and myths of the West, invent your own stories, and spend the week making puppets, stages, and scenery. There will be a special end of camp puppet theater performance.

June 29-July 3
Native Americans of the West

Discover the lifeways and stories of the different Native American tribes in the west. Learn about their food, stories, games, music and art. Find out how they celebrated their family traditions in the past and how they live today. Along the way, create your own parfleche, conduct a trade, and weave a basket.

"Life's a Stage" - Theater Camp

Relive the West by acting it out. Play improvisational games and stage stories and folklore, all leading up to a final week end performance for family and friends.

Art of the West

Come explore your artistic nature. Explore the museum galleries and learn about the art created by people who call the west home. Using different media, including pottery, painting and photography, students will be inspired to create their own visions of the west.

Animals of the West

The call of the wild will entice you to explore your inner beast at the museum. Come for an exciting week, as you explore the animals of North America. Draw, sculpt, and track the mysterious creatures that roam our land! You will end your fun filled week with a trip to the Los Angeles Zoo.

Western Adventure Camp

Explore the "Sparkle and Twang" of cowboy life. What do cowboys wear? What songs do they sing? What stories do they tell? Find out this week as you become cowboys and cowgirls. If you have a hankerin' for old west cowboy life, then this camp is for you!

Way Out West Workshops
For ages 8-12

Our one-day workshops allow kids more time to really explore their creativity and to learn a new hobby.

Guided by our experienced teachers, students have fun exploring the creative process, working with a variety of materials and techniques, and gain inspiration from the museum collections and exhibitions.
