Nadine Carson Forum

Named in remembrance of longtime Autry Trustee Nadine Carson, and supported by the generosity of her many friends and family, this series of eclectic programs provide an opportunity to connect the past with the future and to explore new ways of thinking and learning about the American West.

For the second series, the programs in the Nadine Carson Forum focus on women surviving tough economic times: what happens to women, what they need, and how they can find resources to meet their needs. These programs provide a lead-in to the upcoming exhibition, Homelands: How Women Made the West scheduled to open in April 2010.

All programs are free with museum admission.
Please note that space is limited and full seating capacity is expected to fill quickly.

In partnership with the Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA) this program addresses women’s decisions about what and where food for the family is purchased. Guest speaker Michael Woo, Board Chair for SEE-LA and recently named Dean of Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design, will discuss the organic food movement, current trends and how it affects the environment, economy, and women and family households.  Guest speaker Pompea Smith, SEE-LA CEO, will discuss sustainable living and what are the real costs of our food decisions.

The second half of the program features a cooking challenge between two local chefs. Fresh ingredients will be provided by the Atwater Village and Echo Park Farmers’ Market. This live challenge will entertain and inform audiences about making decisions that not only save times but also leave a smaller carbon footprint while still providing a delicious meal for the family. Competition rules and criteria will be moderated by Tara Thomas, owner of Traxx Restaurant at Union Station.

Fresh Produce
In an effort to promote eating fresh and locally, a Farmers’ Market produce stand will be made available for guests to sample seasonal fruit and vegetables throughout the program. Light reception catered by Cheers Cafe.

Judging
Judges include representatives from the Autry National Center and SEE-LA. A member of the viewing audience will be selected at random the day of the program to assist in judging the competition. To be eligible to be selected, you must RSVP by August 25th. Judges will have 15 minutes to determine a winner.
