Jewish immigrants arriving in Galveston, Texas

Americans rushed westward again in the 1880s, spurred by land speculation after the completion of new transcontinental railroads. Jewish men and women from East Coast communities also joined this migration, along with immigrants from eastern Europe fleeing crushing poverty, violent pogroms (or organized and officially sanctioned persecution), and restrictive laws.
