After the European revolutions of 1848, economic upheavals, and anti-Jewish restrictions, many people sought to leave their homelands for a new life in America. Discovery of gold in California, after the U.S. war with Mexico, created a rush of people heading west. Most Jews departed by ship from New York, crossed the isthmus at Panama or Nicaragua, or sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco. In the Far West, as in Texas and New Mexico, Jewish pioneers found open societies with few restrictions and many opportunities.
