Honoring Helen Kleberg Groves with the Western Heritage Award, and celebrating the indomitable spirit of the women of the West
The Western Heritage Award recognizes individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the art, culture, and legacy of our American West. The Autry National Center is pleased to recognize Helen Kleberg Groves for her contributions as a rancher, author, and philanthropist. Raised on the legendary King Ranch, Groves is known as the "first lady of cutting," having spent more than two decades breeding, raising, and riding cutting horses on her ranch while competing at almost every major show. She has also established herself as a major presence in breeding and racing Thoroughbreds and is a leading supporter of equine research.
Sponsorship Opportunities and Tickets
The Autry National Center's 2009 Celebrate the Spirit: Women of the West Gala takes its inspiration from the Autry's upcoming exhibitions Home Lands: How Women Made the West , which explores how women have shaped the landscape of the American West, and The Art of Native American Basketry: A Living Tradition, which celebrates the artistry and craft of these predominantly female basket makers. Funds from the Gala provide support for the Autry's core exhibitions and make possible the extensive educational and outreach programs that serve tens of thousands of students, families, teachers, and scholars annually — including nearly 50,000 schoolchildren each year from schools located in the most challenged communities in the Los Angeles area.
