Let’s Make History! Dream Catchers

The exact origins of the dream catcher are unknown; however, legends surrounding dream catchers exist for tribes all across North America. Dream catchers were woven by grandfathers and grandmothers for newborn children and hung above cradleboards to ensure peaceful, beautiful dreams. Examine other Native American artifacts in the galleries and then join us to make a dream catcher of your own. Free with museum admission.

Let’s Make History at the Southwest! Clay Pinch Pots

Some early Native American cultures lined their cooking baskets with mud that would harden and create a stronger surface in which to cook. From there developed the art of Native American pottery. The Indians of the Southwest are renowned for their skills in pottery making and design. Visit the Southwest Museum and make a clay pinch pot of your own design.

A View from the Braun Lectures Series: Ethnomusicology

Elisabeth Waldo Dentzel is a legendary musician and patroness of the arts who will review a history of her career and its influence on American culture in the 20th century. Dentzel is an amazing violinist (she was first chair for Leopold Stokowski) and recording artist, who has taken Indigenous and ethnic musical instruments and musicians to audiences across the country and the globe in a way that has artistically expanded and educated our understanding of music. Elisabeth and her late husband, Southwest Museum Director Carl Dentzel, made the museum a centerpiece for cultural exploration and personal interaction through her groups of ethnic musicians and a dedication to celebrating the past in the present.

Pioneer children had very few possessions they could bring on their journeys west, and toys were not a high priority. Games and toys were made from whatever was on hand. Mothers might use a leftover scrap of cloth to make a doll. Come see replicas of other pioneer children’s toys and make a handkerchief doll to take home. Free with museum admission.

Sizzling Summer Nights Featuring Perico Hernández y Son de la Tierra
6-9 pm Griffith Park
José “Perico” Hernández y Son de la Tierra play the full range of Afro-Cuban music, but for years Hernández has been a musician’s musician, performing on records and film soundtracks and playing gigs with other Latin bands. He led a charanga-style band called Charangoa, where he played congas and sang at Hollywood nightspot El Floridita. There, on Friday nights, many a great musician would stop by to see the master at work. In May 2002, he recorded Caravana Cubana, which features an all-star lineup of Cuban and Latin musicians—everyone from the Grammy-winning Cuban pianist Jesus Chucho Valdes and the singers in Bamboleo, to Miguel Anga Diaz and Jimmy Bosch.

Since 1997, Charangoa has kept the flame of traditional charanga alive in L.A. One of the few women in salsa, bandleader and arranger Fay Roberts fires up her flute in this distinct Cuban charanga-style orchestra.
