   Viva el Cinco

  

The Autry National Center celebrates the spirit of community at this year’s Viva el Cinco celebration in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Join us for a festive day with ballet folklorico, mariachis, and charros. You be the judge in our salsa-tasting competition. Our cafe will be open for business with its famous taco bar, and you can learn the secrets of tortilla making through a live demonstration. Engaging activities for children include making papel picado and a scavenger hunt in the museum galleries, which will not only entertain but enlighten visitors about Mexican and Mexican American culture.

Join exhibition artist J. Michael Walker in search of the saintly named streets of Los Angeles. Board a luxury charter bus in search of the streets featured in his paintings with a stop at historic Olvera Street. Take a culinary tour of Los Angeles with LA Times food critic and California Culinary Historian Charles Perry as he discuss the fascinating fusion found in Los Angeles cuisine with other historians, and chefs. Sample delectable dishes prepared by the Autry's very own Master Chef Carolyn Baer of Cheers Catering Inc.

March 20- Encarnacion's Kitchen Join LA Times food critic and California Culinary Historian Charles Perry for a sampling of dishes from Encarnacion's Kitchen, the first Spanish-Language cookbook ever published in California. Get a taste the not-so-lost Californio culture with special selections from this 1000 recipe volume and discover the hidden history of California through all five of your senses.
